Guide Overview

What Are Hair Extensions?

Hair extensions are strands of real human hair that are professionally attached to your natural hair to add length, volume, or both.

High-quality extensions blend seamlessly with your own hair and can completely transform the look and fullness of your hairstyle.

Depending on the method used, extensions can last anywhere from a few weeks to several months with proper maintenance.

Professional salons use different attachment methods depending on the client’s hair type, the desired result and how long the extensions should last.

Types of Hair Extensions

Hair extensions come in several different methods, each designed for different hair types and lifestyles.

The most common types are:

Tape extensions
Keratin (fusion) extensions
Clip-in extensions
• Weft extensions

The best method depends on how much length or volume you want, how often you style your hair and how long you want the extensions to last.

Professional salons usually recommend methods that blend naturally with your hair while protecting the health of your natural hair.

Today, the two most common professional methods are tape extensions and keratin extensions.

Which Hair Extension Methods Are Safest for Your Natural Hair?

Not all hair extension methods affect natural hair in the same way.

At Royal Hair we have worked with extensions for many years and carefully monitored how different methods affect the health of the hair over time.

Through long-term client follow-ups and consultations, we observed clear differences between the most common techniques.

Weft Extensions

Weft extensions are attached by sewing or beading a track of hair close to the scalp.

While this method can create a lot of volume quickly, we stopped offering weft installations in our salons after repeatedly seeing signs of hair stress and shedding among clients who used this method over time.

The weight of weft extensions is distributed across larger sections of the natural hair, which can create unnecessary tension on the scalp.

Over time this tension can lead to increased hair shedding.

For this reason we no longer recommend weft extensions as a professional installation method in our salons.

However, for clients who are already familiar with this technique and still prefer it, we can help source the hair if needed.

Tape Extensions

Tape extensions are attached using thin adhesive strips that sit flat against the natural hair.

They are faster to install than most other methods and are widely used in the hair extension industry.

Tape extensions generally create less tension than weft extensions, but they still require regular maintenance as the natural hair grows.

Most tape extensions need maintenance every 4–6 weeks.

Keratin Extensions (Fusion Method)

Keratin extensions are attached strand by strand using small keratin bonds.

When applied correctly, this method distributes weight evenly and allows the hair to move naturally.

Because of this, keratin extensions are widely considered one of the safest long-term extension methods when installed by trained professionals.

At Royal Hair we use a refined micro-keratin technique designed to minimize stress on the natural hair while maintaining a secure hold.

The most important factor is the size of the keratin bond and the amount of natural hair used for each attachment.

If the bond is too large or attached to too few natural hair strands, it can create tension that may lead to hair breakage.

Precision and experience are therefore essential when working with keratin extensions.

Why Bond Size Matters

One of the biggest differences between professional keratin installations is the size of the keratin bonds.

Many salons abroad use larger keratin bonds to speed up the installation process. While this allows stylists to work faster, the larger bonds often place more weight on fewer natural hair strands.

This can create unnecessary tension on the hair and scalp.

Over the years we have seen many clients come to our salons after having keratin extensions installed abroad in places such as Turkey or Poland. In many of these cases the bonds were significantly larger than what is suitable for fine Nordic hair.

Because Scandinavian hair is often finer, using heavy keratin bonds can increase the risk of hair shedding or breakage.

For this reason we introduced ultra-small keratin bonds starting from approximately 0.2 grams per strand, designed specifically to match finer Nordic hair types.

Smaller bonds distribute weight more evenly and allow the extensions to move more naturally with the hair.

Many clients who previously had negative experiences with keratin extensions change their opinion after seeing how small and lightweight these bonds can be.

When keratin extensions are installed with the correct bond size and the right amount of natural hair per strand, they can be one of the most comfortable and natural-looking extension methods available.

Why Nordic Hair Requires Smaller Keratin Bonds

Hair structure varies significantly across different regions of the world. Nordic and Scandinavian hair is often naturally finer and softer than many other hair types.

Because the individual hair strands are thinner, they cannot safely support the same amount of weight as thicker hair types.

When large keratin bonds are attached to fine Nordic hair, the weight may be carried by too few natural strands. Over time this can increase tension on the hair root and lead to unnecessary shedding.

This is one of the main reasons why installation techniques that work in other regions do not always translate well to Nordic hair types.

At Royal Hair we adapted our keratin extension technique specifically for Scandinavian hair. By using smaller bonds and carefully matching the weight of each extension to the density of the natural hair, we are able to create a result that looks natural while protecting the health of the hair.

This approach allows clients with fine or medium Nordic hair to safely wear keratin extensions with a much lower risk of tension or damage compared to traditional larger-bond methods.

Hair Loss Solutions – Toppers & Medical Wigs

Hair extensions are not always the best solution for everyone.

Many women experience thinning hair on the crown area due to genetics, pregnancy, hormonal changes, stress or menopause.

In these cases, hair toppers or wigs can sometimes be a better solution.

Hair Toppers for Thin Hair

Hair toppers are designed to add density and volume on the top of the head where the hair is often thinnest.

Unlike a full wig, a topper blends with your own hair and attaches using small clips.

This allows it to be applied or removed within seconds.

Hair toppers are a popular option for women who want more volume on the crown area without wearing a full wig.

Breathable Medical Wigs Made From Real Hair

For clients experiencing more significant hair loss due to medical conditions, wigs may be the best option.

Many traditional wigs are made with synthetic bases that trap heat and moisture against the scalp.

This can cause discomfort, sweating or allergic reactions for some people.

To solve this, we introduced wigs made from 100% Slavic human hair with breathable cap construction.

These wigs are designed without plastic or non-breathable materials, allowing the scalp to breathe and reducing the risk of irritation for sensitive skin.

The result is a natural look and improved comfort for people experiencing medical hair loss.

For many clients, this helps restore confidence and allows them to feel like themselves again.

Tape vs Keratin Extensions

Tape extensions are attached using thin adhesive strips that sit flat against the hair.

They are quick to install and usually need maintenance every 4–6 weeks as the natural hair grows.

Keratin extensions are attached strand by strand using small keratin bonds.

This method takes longer to install but offers a more flexible and natural movement in the hair.

With proper care, keratin extensions can last several months before maintenance is needed.

The best option depends on your hair type, lifestyle and the result you want to achieve.

Do Salons Use the Same Hair That Is Sold Online?

At Royal Hair we use the same premium human hair in our salons as we sell in our online store.

Many salons use different grades of hair for professional installations compared to what is sold online. We believe clients should have access to the same quality hair whether they purchase it through our webshop or have it installed professionally in our salons.

Using the same hair both in our salons and online also allows clients to easily maintain or add more hair later, since the quality, texture and color system remain consistent.

This transparency helps ensure that clients know exactly what hair is being used and can trust the quality they receive.

How Much Do Hair Extensions Cost?

The price of hair extensions depends on several factors, including:

• Hair quality
• Hair length
• Amount of hair needed
• Installation method
• Styling and blending

Premium human hair extensions are more expensive but also last much longer and blend more naturally with your own hair.

In professional salons, the final price usually includes the hair itself, installation and styling to ensure the extensions blend perfectly with your natural hair.

Because every client has different hair density and length goals, the most accurate way to estimate the cost is through a consultation or a hair extension calculator.

How Long Do Hair Extensions Last?

How long hair extensions last depends on the method used and how well they are maintained.

Tape extensions usually require maintenance every 4–6 weeks.

Keratin extensions can often last several months before needing adjustment.

High-quality human hair extensions can sometimes be reused depending on the method used.

Proper care, professional installation and the right products can significantly extend the lifespan of both the extensions and your natural hair.

Do Hair Extensions Damage Your Hair?

Hair extensions do not damage natural hair when they are installed correctly and maintained properly.

Most problems occur when:

• extensions are installed incorrectly
• too much weight is placed on thin hair
• the wrong method is used for the hair type
• incorrect hair products are used

Professional installation and choosing the right method for your hair type are the most important factors in protecting natural hair.

When installed correctly and maintained properly, extensions allow you to enjoy longer and fuller hair without harming your natural hair.

How Much Hair Do You Need?

The amount of hair needed depends on:

• your natural hair thickness
• the desired length
• the amount of volume you want

Some clients only need extensions for extra volume, while others want a full transformation with both length and density.

Longer extensions usually require more hair to maintain a balanced and natural look.

Because every person’s hair is different, the best way to determine the correct amount is through a professional consultation or a hair extension calculator.

Slavic Hair vs Other Hair Types

Not all human hair extensions are the same. The origin and quality of the hair make a significant difference in how natural the extensions look, how long they last and how well they blend with your own hair.

Many extensions on the market are made from mixed or heavily processed hair. This type of hair often requires chemical treatment or silicone coatings to appear smooth and shiny when new, but the quality may decline quickly after washing and regular use.

Slavic hair is widely considered one of the highest quality hair types available for extensions. The natural structure is finer and softer, which makes it particularly suitable for people with Scandinavian and Northern European hair types.

Because the cuticle structure is preserved and the hair is not heavily processed, Slavic hair tends to last longer, tangle less and blend more naturally with fine or medium-density hair.

At Royal Hair we specialize in premium Slavic human hair extensions selected for durability, natural movement and long-term wear.

Hair Extensions Maintenance & Aftercare

Products Designed for Hair Extensions

The products you use on hair extensions are just as important as the installation itself.

At Royal Hair we carefully select and sell hair care products that are compatible with the attachment methods we use in the salon, especially keratin and tape extensions.

Many regular hair products contain ingredients that can weaken extension bonds over time. Certain oils, proteins or heavy treatments may soften keratin bonds or affect adhesive tapes, which can shorten the lifespan of the extensions.

For this reason, the products we recommend and sell are chosen specifically to:

protect keratin and tape bonds
• avoid ingredients that weaken attachment points
• support healthy natural hair
• tolerate normal styling and heat use

Using products designed for extensions helps ensure that both the bonds and the hair remain strong and that the extensions last as long as possible.

Sleeping With Hair Extensions – Silk Caps vs Pillowcases

One of the most common causes of tangling and unnecessary wear on hair extensions happens during sleep.

Through feedback from our long-term clients, we found that protecting the hair at night makes a significant difference in how extensions look the next day.

Many people traditionally use silk pillowcases, but during an internal survey with our regular clients we discovered that a silk cap is often more practical.

A silk cap keeps the hair protected throughout the night, reduces friction, and prevents the hair from moving excessively while sleeping. Clients also pointed out that a cap is much easier to travel with compared to bringing a pillowcase on holidays or trips.

Many of our clients now simply brush their hair before bed, put on a silk cap, and wake up with smooth hair that requires minimal styling the next day.

Brushes Designed for Hair Extensions

Brushing is another important factor when maintaining hair extensions.

Regular brushes can sometimes pull too aggressively on extension bonds or create unnecessary tension on the natural hair.

For this reason we developed an extension-friendly brush designed to detangle hair gently without pulling on the bonds.

The brush was also designed based on client feedback. Many clients wanted a brush that was compact enough to carry in a handbag, so we included a small protective pouch to keep the brush clean while traveling.

Heat Protection for Hair Extensions

Human hair extensions can be styled with heat tools such as curling irons or straighteners, but heat protection is important to maintain the hair quality.

A dedicated heat protection spray helps protect both the natural hair and the extensions from excessive heat exposure while styling.

Using proper heat protection helps preserve the softness and longevity of the hair while reducing the risk of dryness or damage caused by frequent styling.

Proper care plays an important role in how long hair extensions last and how natural they continue to look over time.

Although extensions are made from real human hair, they do not receive natural oils from the scalp in the same way as your own hair. Because of this, they require slightly different care routines.

To keep extensions in the best condition, it is generally recommended to:

• Brush the hair gently using an extension-friendly brush
• Avoid sleeping with wet hair
• Tie the hair loosely or braid it when sleeping
Use gentle, sulfate-free hair products
• Avoid excessive heat styling

Regular maintenance appointments also help ensure that extensions continue to sit comfortably and blend naturally as your own hair grows.

With proper care and professional installation, high-quality human hair extensions can remain beautiful and wearable for many months.

Who Should NOT Get Hair Extensions?

Hair extensions can transform hair by adding length and volume, but they are not always the best solution for every situation.

In some cases, alternative solutions may be more suitable.

For example, people experiencing significant hair thinning on the crown area may benefit more from a hair topper rather than full extensions.

Similarly, individuals experiencing medical hair loss or conditions affecting the scalp may find that wigs or other hair replacement solutions provide better comfort and coverage.

A professional consultation helps determine whether extensions, toppers or wigs are the best option for each individual case.

The goal is always to choose the solution that protects the natural hair while delivering the most natural-looking result.

Hair Extensions FAQ

Below are some of the most common questions people ask before getting hair extensions.

Can hair extensions look natural?

Yes. High-quality human hair extensions installed by a professional can blend seamlessly with your natural hair.

The correct amount of hair, the right method and proper styling are key to achieving a natural result.

How long does it take to install hair extensions?

Installation time depends on the method and the amount of hair used.

Tape extensions can often be installed within about an hour, while keratin extensions may take several hours because each strand is attached individually.

Are hair extensions safe for thin hair?

Hair extensions can be safe for thin hair when the correct method and amount of hair are used. Lightweight techniques and professional installation help minimize stress on the natural hair.

Can you wash hair extensions normally?

Yes. Hair extensions made from real human hair can be washed similarly to natural hair, although gentler products and careful brushing are recommended.

Can hair extensions fall out?

Properly installed extensions should stay secure until the natural hair grows and maintenance is required. Regular follow-up appointments help keep them positioned correctly.

Can hair extensions be colored?

High-quality human hair extensions can often be toned or colored, but this should always be done carefully and preferably by professionals to maintain hair quality.

Are hair extensions suitable for everyday styling?

Yes. Human hair extensions can be styled, curled or straightened just like natural hair. Using heat protection and moderate styling helps maintain the hair’s condition.
