We use AI. But not for the reason you think.

Why do we use AI when we work with real people?

Some of our strongest before photos are also the images our customers least want the world to see.

That is why we have chosen a different approach.

Kamilla explains why Royal Hair uses AI, where we draw the line, and why this is really more about privacy than technology.

At Royal Hair, we work with hair every single day.

But very often, our work is about much more than hair.

We meet women who come to us with very thin hair, visible scalp, hair loss after illness, hormonal changes, or periods in life when their hair has changed dramatically.

Some have spent months or years trying to hide it.

Others have stopped wearing their hair the way they actually want to.

Some come to us after serious illness and simply want to feel a little more like themselves again.

And when they leave our salon, the difference is often enormous.

Not just in their hair.

In the way they carry themselves.

The hardest photo to ask a customer for

We love before-and-after photos.

They show what a topper, extensions or a wig can actually do in a way that words never can.

But there is one problem.

The before photo.

Imagine coming to us because your hair has become so thin on top that you no longer feel comfortable with other people seeing it.

We help you.

You look in the mirror afterwards and perhaps feel like yourself again for the first time in a long time.

And then we ask:

“Can we post a photo of how you looked before?”

For us, it is marketing.

For the customer, it may be the one photo she never wants anyone else to see.

We completely understand that.

It is not only our everyday customers

We see the same thing with public figures and influencers we work with.

They are often happy to share the final result.

They are happy to say that they love their hair.

But that does not necessarily mean they want us to show what their hair looked like when they first came to us.

And that is completely understandable.

If you have gone to a specialist because you want more hair, more volume or to hide hair loss, the starting point is often exactly what you do not want to show to thousands of people.

That is why we use AI

This is where AI has taken on a completely different meaning for us than we first imagined.

We do not use AI because we want everyone to look perfect.

We do not want perfect faces.

We do not want flawless skin.

We do not want to pretend that reality is more beautiful than it is.

We use AI because it gives us the opportunity to illustrate real problems without exposing real people.

Thin hair.

Visible scalp.

Hair loss.

Lack of volume.

The need for a topper.

The need for a wig.

The need for extensions.

These are issues we see every single week.

But the person you see in an illustration does not have to be the woman who trusted us with her own story.

We can show the problem without showing the customer

We document certain treatments when necessary for follow-up, quality control and guarantees.

But the fact that an image exists in our records does not automatically mean it should be published.

Those are two completely different things.

With the help of AI, we can take inspiration from the kinds of problems we see in real life and create an illustration that shows:

  • what very thin hair can look like

  • what hair loss on the crown can look like

  • what a topper can cover

  • how extensions can create volume

  • how a wig can change the overall appearance

without revealing who the actual customer is.

For us, that difference matters.

But we also have to be honest

AI gives us an opportunity.

It also gives us a responsibility.

We will never use an AI-generated image and pretend that it is a real customer photo if it is not.

That is why we want to be clear about the difference between:

real customer photos

real product and colour photos

illustrations created with the help of AI

On our new website, you will see all three.

When we have a real result that a customer has given us permission to share, we use it.

When we show hair colours, we want to use real hair.

When we show situations where we do not want to expose a customer, we may use an illustration.

Hair is more personal than many people realise

A nail salon can show a hand before and after.

A car-detailing company can show a scratch in the paint.

We work with the head, the face and the hair.

For many women, hair is closely tied to identity, femininity and confidence.

For some, hair loss is also connected to illness.

Medication.

Age.

A period of life they may not want to explain to other people.

That means we believe we have an extra responsibility.

Just because a before photo would make great content for us does not mean the customer owes us the right to publish it.

We are still sceptical about a lot of AI

We do not believe everything AI is used for is positive.

We also do not want a beauty industry where everyone is expected to look completely perfect.

That is not the world we want to contribute to.

But we have discovered that the technology can also be used in a different way.

It can help us show what we do honestly while protecting the people who come to us.

That is why we use it.

Why the new Royal Hair website looks different

On our new website, you will see:

  • real hair

  • real colour photos

  • real products

  • real salon work

  • real before-and-after results when the customer has given us permission to share them

  • and some AI-assisted illustrations where privacy and dignity matter more than our need to show a real person

Our goal is not perfection.

Our goal is to help you understand what we can help you with, how our products work and which solution may be right for you.

Without having to make someone else’s insecurity public in order to prove what we can do.

For us, that feels like the right balance.
